The Virginia Sunroom – Better Sunroom Design

Ideally most homeowners want to have a sunroom that will let them enjoy the light of the sun without being oppressed by an abundance of rays that they can’t do anything about. There’s nothing more annoying than having a sunroom that you can’t enjoy because you’re overwhelmed by natural light. That glare is anything but relaxing.

When you properly plan a sunroom, this can be avoided and the space can be far more comfortable. For example, a room that is properly planned from conception down to the dcor and style will offer the optimal sense of truly becoming one with nature while staying cozy inside the home. A great example of this would be an expansive sunroom that has terra-cotta floors accented by true vintage wicker. Add to it a style of large, open windows and you have an elegant design that most would finding both relaxing and attractive.

In order to keep that relaxing space from turning into a bake shop or a sauna, it’s common to include black out curtains or fabric covers for each of the windows. While one might thing this would detract from the point of a sunroom with expansive windows it actually makes it the ideal place to relax – most homeowners don’t want full sunlight on a daily basis. That’s like living in a fishbowl.

There are numerous things to keep in mind when you’re getting ready to design on your sunroom. One of the first is the fact that when you’re building your sunroom you want to have a natural view of the landscape around you but you don’t want to be so close that you blot out the sun. Clear the area for your sunroom, especially overhead, so branches and tree canopies don’t block the natural sunlight.

Ventilation is also extremely important when you’re building out your sunroom. Whether you use it year round or just in the warm months you want to make sure that air can move easily through your sunroom and that it is fully ventilated. Otherwise your sunroom will simply turn into a stuffy and stifling over during the hot days where the inside air cannot escape or be circulated.

Think about how you plan to use the sunroom. This is important because the finishing touches and the primary architecture should change to accommodate the purpose of the room. If it’s going to be a fitness sunroom that houses treadmills and free weights you’re not likely to want decorate Victorian style chair and crown moldings. Expensive tile floors aren’t likely the best option for a play area, pet room or weight training spot.

Lastly, determine whether or not you’ll be using the sunroom on a regular basis throughout the year or if you’ll be shutting your sunroom down during the cooler months (holding it primarily for spring and summer). This will help you decide how to insulate the sunroom, if it needs to be heated or if it should be sealed off as a separate area from the rest of the home when it’s closed for the winter.

Steel Building Varieties

Due to the economy construction has slowed down quite a bit. It can be fairly expensive to build a building depending on what types of materials are needed. One form of building that many people use are steel buildings. These can be manufactured at a shop and then moved in large pieces to be put together where you need the building.

Some churches are turning to metal buildings. Several churches do not have the money existing for a huge building so they can start out with a larger steel building. This is a great approach to expand buildings that you currently have to make a larger church area. When looking for cost effective ways to expand, steel buildings may be what you are looking for.

Metal buildings are an option for school gyms instead of traditional concrete walls. These do seem to cost less when your school needs to improve or upgrade your gym. These are great for those who are looking for a top level quality building without the cost of a customarily built site. These work great for those with limited budgets such as a school who needs to expand.

Many commercial type businesses are turning to metal buildings including aircraft hangers. Still others are strip malls and sports arenas where they have learned the cost effectiveness of picking steel. These buildings can give you a high quality setting for less cost than most constructions can. They can also be built off site and brought in to be pieced together on site.

A great choice for metal buildings are schools and self storage facilities. When you are on a tight budget you want to look into steel buildings for your next building or growth project. These can help you have a high quality area for half the cost. Look at a number of companies and be sure to get estimates to get the best deal you possibly can. You can get the space you need and do it without going broke. Try talking with the steel building specialist in your area and see what they can offer you.

A Quick Review Of Demolition

While the saying what goes up must come down might not apply to historical landmarks, most buildings are eventually scheduled for demolition. The process chosen for demolishing a building depends upon many circumstances. When demolishing a building is mentioned, most people think of building implosion. Deconstruction is a low impact method of tearing down a structure.

With the turnover in functions for the urban landscape, old buildings often need to make way for a replacement. Other buildings become hazardous after a certain age and need to come down for safety reasons. When demolishing a building becomes necessary, the professionals are called in to study the best method of bringing it down and to procure all the legal paperwork.

The more congested the area surrounding a building to be demolished, the more important are the safety precautions. The proper professionals, like demolition engineers and safety inspectors, are called in to draw up a detailed plan for dropping the building. Condemned structures or tall ones need to be carefully prepared to bring down in a safe manner.

The different means and equipment chosen for the job are based on the type and height of a building, as well as its location. For shorter buildings, equipment such as scaffolding, bulldozers, excavators or even demolition workers with sledgehammers might be the method of choice. For taller buildings, high reach excavators using a crane arm or a wrecking ball may be employed.

Whatever the chosen method, first a building interior is usually stripped of everything loose and support beams may be cut. Taller buildings may be brought down to a certain level, and the walls of the building are then undermined, or the support dug from underneath to control in what direction the building will collapse.

In the case of tall buildings or when other processes will not safely collapse the structure, implosion is used. Though this is usually the last method considered, its what most people think of as demolition. The supports are cut part way through and strategic charges are placed to drop the building into its own footprint.

A newer, green method for demolition is called deconstruction. This approach is based on taking the structure apart and saving all the materials which may be used over again in construction. This cuts back on waste that ends up in landfills and is a more environmentally friendly manner of taking down a building.

What Are The Different Types Of Demolition?

Demolition is essentially the opposite of construction. Construction is defined as the putting up of structures while demolition is the tearing down of buildings. For a house to be brought down there must be a solid reason. The common reasons given for house destruction are age and the safety conditions of a structure. However other factors like advancement in architectural and building designs also influence the process.

The most common factors which determine the type of demolition to use are the size and location of a construction. However, all methods involve some safety contemplation though some are regarded safer than others. The main deliberation when undertaking this process is the removal of every material which can be salvaged or termed as valuable.

In major buildings, things like insulating materials, furnishings and copper wires are categorized under valuable items that can be reused. Aside from getting everything which can be reused, there is the removal of harmful elements which can create safety problems. These include glasses which might turn out to be dangerous projectiles as well as asbestos.

The first type is called simple manual demolition. This form of destruction is meant for small structures such as single story homes. Manual destruction is another kind which entails pulling down of the structure. Most frequently, experts use a combination of manual and mechanical forms to bring a structure down.

Usually mechanical demolition is the dragging and knocking down of houses which involves use of machines like excavators, cranes, bulldozers and rams. It may also involve use of wrecking balls attached to the cables. The balls are moved by very huge cranes. Basically mechanical involves battering a building into small pieces.

Undermining is another type of house destruction. The procedure engages the removal of all supporting structures in a building. If this is carried out as planned the process can be a fast one and in the most preferred direction. The other type is implosion, a process termed as most dramatic because it engages controlled series of explosions which causes the house to fall. The volatiles are placed and fired in a directed manner thus causing the building to fall upon itself.

However implosion is done as a last alternative due to the high risk involved. It also entails a lot of work in terms of cleaning the mess. The most current kind of demolition is deconstruction which is said to be the most environmental process. It involves a careful and slow process where the building is taken apart slowly and a lot of material is salvaged for reuse.

Most often professionals use a permutation of mechanical and manual destruction to bring down smaller buildings. For starters we have simple manual type. In demolition, removal of valuable materials is also considered. demolition contractor . This article, What Are The Different Types Of Demolition? has free reprint rights.

How to Deal with Woodworm

When wood boring beetles lay their eggs in woodwork, larvae can hatch and begin consuming the glucose in the wood, damaging the structure. Woodworm infestations are common and in the UK the most found woodworm include the House Longhorn Beetle, the Deathwatch Beetle, the Common Furniture Beetle and the Powderpost Beetle. Each of these beetles will bore into woodwork until they are fully mature, when they leave to find fresh wood.

Woodworm can go unnoticed for some time and a building’s woodwork may be infected without the owners knowing. Woodworm infestations have been known to go unnoticed for years resulting in irreparable damage to a buildings structure. While woodworm most common in historic buildings many newly constructed buildings have been damaged due to poorly maintained structures.

There are a number of tell tale signs that indicate a woodworm infestation but by far the most common is the presence of small round holes in wood. Due to the nature of the beetles these holes may contain a fine dust and the edges of the woodwork may begin to crumble. A significant infestation is usually indicated by seeing adult beetles moving around the woodwork and entering the holes. Finding fine powdery dust near furniture can be a sign that active woodworm are present.

Timber that has been affected by woodworm may need to be replaced if the infestation has gone unnoticed for some time. Any new timber that is to be used to replace the structure of a building should be pre-treated with insecticides to ensure infestation does not occur again. When an infestation has been identified a professional treatment is always recommended, but if caught early it may be possible to treat the wood with DIY insecticide. If wood needs to be replaced, professionals should be used to ensure the structure of the building is left intact.

Professional woodworm treatment involves investigating which species is responsible. Each species has different characteristics and affects wood in different ways. Some infestations can also last for years and cause significant damage. This is why DIY treatment is not always recommended unless professional advice is sought beforehand.

The Code For Sustainable Homes.

Environmental issues are becoming increasingly important and there is an associated increase in public awareness. There is generally less awareness of the contribution that good building design can make to reducing pollution and improving the environment.

Builders whose home designs and completed work are assessed under the Code will receive a certificate showing the overall sustainability rating for the home, and a breakdown of how that rating has been achieved.

From May 2008 homes that are not assessed will have a nil-rated certificate which is produced by the seller of property. Examples of both a Code certificate and a nil rated certificate showing that a home had not been assessed against the Code can be found at Annexes C and D. A nil-rated certificate can be downloaded from the HIP and BRE websites:

The implementation of the Code is managed by BRE Global (formerly BRE Certifi cation Ltd) under contract to the Department for Communities and Local Government under arrangements based on the EcoHomes operating systems. BRE Global is the main license holder.

Under the terms of its agreement with Communities and Local Government, BRE Global issues licenses to both assessors and other Code service providers. BRE Global provides training, licensing and registration of Code assessors to standards ISO 14001 and ISO 9001, within a UKAS registered ‘competent persons scheme’.

Mandatory minimum performance standards are set for some issues. For four of these, a single mandatory requirement is set which must be met, whatever Code level is sought. Credits are not awarded for these issues. Confirmation that the performance requirements are met for all four is a minimum entry requirement for achieving a level 1 rating.

This technical guidance sets out the requirements for the Code, and the process for achieving a Code assessment. It aims to make gaining a Code assessment as simple, transparent and rigorous as possible, inspiring confidence in Code assessors, home builders, product manufacturers and consumers.

The Sustainable Homes is a voluntary standard designed to improve the overall sustainability of new homes by setting a single framework for Sustainable Development.

Dealing with Dry Rot

Dry rot is wood decay caused by fungi that can dramatically damage buildings. Just like any other fungi, regardless of its name, dry rot still requires water to survive. One of the biggest problems associated with dry rot is its ability to penetrate other building materials that are non-wood so that it can transport water to dry areas and begin to manufacturer its own.

All wood decay produces water as part of the process but this ability is dependent on the ventilation and access to air the fungi has. When fungi is attached to wood it will stop the decaying process if the moisture content falls below 20 per cent and begin to die. This is one of the reasons many dry rot problems are found after removing a water supply to a building.

As water is a required element in the process of dry rot decay most methods to stop or prevent decay involve controlling the water supply and environmental conditions of the building. Maintaining dry conditions in a building and reducing the moisture content of any wood used will help to prevent dry rot and can also stop it early. Some buildings that have had dry rot issues for some time will however be irreparable by these methods.

There are a number of surveys available from home repair companies that are used to find sources of moisture entry to a building. Houses that suffer from dry rot generally will have problems with rainwater guttering systems and roofs, particularly the down pipes that the building uses. Many damp proof installations are proven to be defective or even missing if a building is suffering from dry rot and this should be one of the first issues that are addressed when dry rot has been found.

Rapid drying of building materials should be encouraged through proper heating and ventilation but also supplementary building work that prevents moisture entry to a building and encourages aeration. Many people use dehumidifiers to remove moisture from the air but this isn’t the most effective method and it is recommended that professionals are called in.
