Adding new furniture dramatically changes the look and feel of a room and can be a great to refresh your home and your life. the problem is what you do with all that old furniture! It goes into a landfill?! That is not good.

You new hot modern lifestyle does not mean that you should just go around filling the planet up with junk.

Why not paint old furniture? An old wooden chest could look great if you paint it white with bright patterns.

While not as sexy, you could replace your old windows with new energy efficient windows.

Buy Stainless steel when it’s time to replace your old raggedy pots. Pots and pans that are made from stainless steel. Stainless steel is 100% recyclable and stainless steel is composed of about 60% recycled material.

You would not think of it but stainless steel is naturally environmentally friendly because 100% of stainless steel is recyclable when you are ready to buy a new pair. Also most stainless steel is usually about 60% recycled material.

Get a tankless water heater. You will save a lot of money in the end even though you’ll have to pay a little more up front.

If your daughter has been begging you to pick up a new barbie mommy play kitchen complete with a non working sink and a non working stove and a working cabinet door then do a Google image search for “entertainment center play kitchen” and see what you’ll find. It’s awesome. Great before and after pictures of people who turned old entertainment centers into play kitchens. It’s a great idea and cheap! If you don’t have an old entertainment center you can pick one up from the Salvation Army or from Goodwill.

You will be surprised at the quality of stuff you can find at Goodwill.

By using your imagination, you can come up with great projects that can add a new sparkle to you life and home and it does not have to be as expensive or as destructive as buying new furniture and throwing old furniture into a landfill.

How To Get Bed Bugs Out Of Your Clothes

Bed bugs used to be a part of eveyone’s daily life before the Second World War – or should that be ‘a part of everyone’s nocturnal life’? For hundreds of years, people just grinned and bore it; they had to because there were no effectual ways of getting rid of them.

They lived in the stored clothes, the furniture, the bedding and the houses of the rich and poor alike and because houses were located so close together, families were larger and people were in and out of each others houses, you could not eradicate a bed bug infestation for long.

Then came the bombing of European cities in the Second World War 1939-1945 and many inner cities were unsafe, so the authorities decided to take the opportunity to flatten the inner city slums and start again. An equivalent programme was began in America, but not because of devastation.

The authorities pulled down hundreds of millions of houses and made billions of rats, mice, bed bugs, fleas and other nasties homeless. In fact, rat poison and a new wonder insecticide, DDT, were used widely in the clean up. By the end of the Forties or during the Fifties, bed bugs were just about eradicated from the Western World.

The Baby Boomer generation was the first one never to have been bothered by bed bugs. This happy situation lasted until the mid-Nineties, when increased long haul travel and increased immigration permitted bed bugs to hitch lifts back to the West. These unwelcome hitch hikers mostly returned on garments that had been packed away in suitcases.

And so here we are today, in a situation where the West’s major inner cities have a bed bug issue of epidemic proportions. Bed bugs are being passed around from person to person on all types of public transport but particularly buses, trains and taxis and anywhere where individuals gather together, but especially hotels, cinemas and waiting rooms.

So, here are a couple of suggestions on how to avoid infesting your home with bed bugs. If you stop in hotels a couple of nights or one night at a time, merely unpack what you need to at any one time. In other words, live out of your suitcase.

If you are on a longer holiday, by all means, unpack everything, but keep your suitcase shut and have all your clothes boil washed, dry cleaned or tumble-dried on ‘HOT’ before you repack them to go home.

If this cannot be done because of the sort of cloth, examine all the seams, hems, pockets, cuffs and collars and blow them with the hair-dryer on ‘HOT’. The hair-dryer is not anywhere near as effective, but all stages of a bed bug’s life cycle are killed by seven minutes exposure to temperatures above 45C or 115F.

If you cannot heat-treat your clothing before you leave the hotel, seal them up in plastic bags and treat them when you get home – preferably in a laundrette or dry cleaners.

What do you do about your overcoat, if you mingle with others every day on the bus or at work? This is a tough one. Bed bugs are resistant to all forms of insect killer, which is why we are having this epidemic, so you will literally have to examine your overcoat each time you come home or get one that you can put in the tumble-dryer each night.

One bed bug can lay 300 eggs and go for a year without feeding, so you cannot know that you have not got bed bugs, you can just say that you have not seen any – yet.

Want a job where you can get your hands dirty and admire the results of your hard work? When most people think of plastering, they picture someone applying a wet finish to walls and ceilings of a building. This is called solid plastering, and it’s only one side of plastering.

Plastering isn’t just about smoothing down a wet finish on interior walls: it’s also about using sand, cement and drylining to create a variety of finishes both inside and outside.

As well as that side of plastering there is also the restoration side- for example; fibrous plastering involves making ornamental plasterwork in a workshop and then installing it in ceilings of decorative buildings. From moulding decorative ceiling work to finishing exteriors, plastering is an essential trade that offers lots of opportunities to any hardworking, handy apprentice.

As a plastering apprentice, you’d be introduced to the tools and materials involved, which, at first, would involve a certain amount of fetching, carrying and mixing in buckets. As you progress through your apprenticeship, though, you’d be working alongside a professional plasterer with many years’ experience who’d teach you the skills he’s acquired over the years … and, of course, pay you while you’re learning the trade.

After you’ve completed your apprenticeship, you’ll have the skills and nationally-recognised qualifications to start at a salary of between 14,000 and 17,000 … and once you’ve got some experience working for somebody else, you might want to go independent and charge your customers a lot more.

Charity Shops And Closet Clean Outs

One way of dividing up people that crosses the barriers of age, sex, religion and ethnicity is whether you are a hoarder or not. There are a great deal of hoarders, although some hoarders refer to themselves as collectors or only nostalgic.

That last sentence may be a tad unfair. Collecting can be explained away as a hobby and nostalgia can be considered a yearning for days when we were in better condition.

However, what it all comes down to for billions of households is the buildup of old junk and old clothing. My mother and her mother had decades of clothes that they were sure would come back into fashion one day.

They were probably right and it almost certainly did, but they had to look after the stuff for twenty or thirty years and then teenagers were wearing it, not middle-aged mothers and grandmothers.

My point is that we should clear out our closets and wardrobes more frequently in order to make space and pass items on to those who can use them now rather than in twenty years time. I think that closets ought to be gone through once or twice a year.

Apart from seasonal gear, if you have not worn something for months, there has to be a good reason. Either you do not like it any more; you have gained weight or it does not suit you. So why not pass it on? Write it off and let someone else benefit from it before the moths do.

You could take them to the Salvation Army, Shelter or any other charity shop or wait for your local church, school or scout brigade to hold a fund-raising bazaar or bring-and-buy sale.

This clears out room for you so that you can see the wood for the trees, permits a charity to profit from your surplus and permits someone more needy than you to have decent quality clothing at less than the retail price.

If you have let spring cleaning drift a bit, not to worry. There are charity shops that have racks specializing in old-fashioned clothes. They call it retro and there are loads of people who enjoy wearing it.

There are also theatre and film companies scouring the secondhand clothes shops searching for period clothing. One of your old suits could feature in the next Fifties remake!

However, passing your old, good quality clothing on to charity shops or specialist retro stores, whether you donate or sell them, is merely one side of the coin. You can also purchase from these stores.

If you have not been in a charity shop for years or think that you would not be seen dead in one, then you ought to go along and have a look. They are no longer the sad, amateurish places that they once were. They are run professionally and have a decent turnover of stock. They are an especially good source of warm winter clothing such as overcoats, so why not do everyone a favour and go and have a look sometime soon?

Challenging Art Lovers: Modern Art Or Abstract Paintings

No matter what the media, styles are always changing. It shows in architecture, music, books and clothing. These represent shifting ideals, social or political upheaval, even the whims of their creator. Modern art or abstract paintings are no different.

Once used to describe a huge change in the world of art, even abstract and modern mean different things to a changing world. This is because they are defined by what went before. Current ideas of traditional was once a challenge to some society.

Though some ideals persist, such as challenging viewers with unexpected methods of expression, there are new ways to do that. Some are funny with a cruel edge, such as those which begin with the familiar portrait but plant a gas mask on the subjects nose. There is a language to painting, sculpture, carving, and it alters just as our own vernacular does.

Going beyond themes to representation, abstract painting really challenged the viewer. Not everything would be obvious. Not all forms fit with regular visual semantics, especially around the times of World Wars and other conflicts throughout the world. Discerning eyes, nose; the shape of a boat or the figures on a distant hill might not be so easy any more since life seemed more fractured to the artist. This same perspective continues among some creators as our world decreases in size and we get a look at images from gun fights and bombings.

Modern art began to push boundaries well over a century ago and continues to do so. Before modern art started to question long held moral and political norms, changes often tended towards ways to make paint or advancing techniques for realistic representation. Now, media makes all the difference. Artists work with concrete, video cameras and photography. Visual displays move or depict the less grandiose, more everyday subject matter and individuals. There are still going to be portraits of the wealthy and idyllic landscapes out there, but they have long since learned to vie with contemporary media and methods in their given market.

Even graffiti has become art. Where once, this was considered vandalism, today some prominent individuals receive four-figure sums for their canvasses. These often depict nothing more than some words, though chosen for particular reasons and designed with care. As always, their choices indicate prevailing feelings within a culture, in this case urban life after the year 2000.

Today, just about anyone who can afford it has access to art, and in many instances price tags are in the hundreds, not thousands. Works are available on-line, at auctions and exhibitions. Some enterprising coffee houses will sell the works of a respected individual or friend on their walls along with a latte.

Decorating Children’s Rooms

If you’re unhappy with the way your home looks, the best thing you can do is redecorate it. Not necessarily all at once of course, as this will lead to problem upon problem and is certain to bring you stress when you really don’t need it. However if you start room by room, your redecorating project will become that much easier and more manageable.

Your next step then is to figure out which room you want to decorated first. It’s not an easy choice to make but it must be done nevertheless. How about beginning by decorating the kids rooms first as this will lead to a general air of satisfaction amongst them and can help you in the long run too.

Decorating kids rooms can be an enjoyable way to pass your time and also gives you the chance to bond with your kids too. I can’t think of a better way to get close to your kids than by getting down to their level and talking about the things that interest them. Decorating their rooms might be the best way to do that.

But where do you start? If you’ve more than one kid you need to be careful about whose room you’re going to decorate first, as things can get tense. Decorating kids rooms can be fraught with tension if you don’t handle it delicately, so I’ve found that the best way to deal with it is to flip a coin in the air and have the kids call out heads or tails.

This method might not work however if you’ve got more than two kids or more than two rooms to decorate. In which case I’d suggest you just wade in and start the whole decorating process at once instead of tackling it room by room.

At least it’s not the whole house and this way you promote happier feelings amongst the children with no one feeling that they have been slighted by having their room done last. What tends to happen in most cases when youre decorating the rooms with the kids help though is that more paint and stuff gets everywhere but where it’s intended. But then again that was part of the reason you decided to start by decorating kids rooms and perhaps even their play areas, wasn’t it.

You’ll be much happier for at least having started on your decorating plans and your children will be happier for having their rooms redone too, not to mention the sheer pleasure you’ll be enjoying while you’re busy doing all this. Of course, This isn’t to say, that decorating kids rooms isn’t completely hassle or stress free.

On the contrary, you’ll probably get a shedload more stress by the time you’ve finished, but at least you’ll have had the satisfaction of getting closer to your children and seeing their rooms tidy for at least one day before they move back into them again.

The problems of displaying a large fresh tree in your home are mostly overblown. Here are some tips to get you going:

Preparing for your cut Christmas tree: You may want to protect the floors in the area where you are going to display your cut pine because there could be a lot of foot traffic, liquid spills or heavy things being dragged around. A cut Christmas tree is fairly heavy so you may want to plan out a way to secure it to a railing or wall just to be extra cautious. You almost certainly will need an outlet close by for lights and decorations. It’s important to be smart when choosing the size of a live tree by measuring the area you are going to use.

Giving it water: To assist with water absorption, you can use a handsaw or chainsaw to cut an inch or so off the trunk before setting it in the stand. If you do not want to worry about forgetting to add water, you should want to look into one of the many automatic Christmas tree watering products. The amount of water you will need to give your Christmas tree will be determined by how big it is and the humidity in the room. Hot and dry homes will probably mean more regular watering trips, while colder homes may require a little fewer watering sessions.

Other issues to consider: Most electric Christmas lights are perfectly safe, but light-emitting-diode or LED Christmas decorations run cooler than normal lights and cost less to operate. Obviously, you want to be safe with electric decorations by always turning them off when you leave your house and by not overloading all the outlets you have. Decorating a fresh cut tree is no different than with an artificial one, but safety should always be a primary concern. Again, be certain your large tree cannot fall or be knocked over very easily.

Even if you’ve been using an artificial tree for all your life you owe it to yourself to try a freshly cut pine at least once. While they can be more work than the artificial ones, fresh Christmas trees can add a unique touch to the holiday season. A freshly cut Christmas tree can truly make a huge difference during your holiday season.
